Writing about Sex and Violence

I have been accused of not putting enough sex and violence in my stories, and this, I am told, is why they don't sell millions and splash my gray head all over the tabloids and Oprah. I can live with this. I actually have a couple in that of that genre coming out soon.

It is not difficult thing to write that sort of story. After all, anyone who has been married and made a few babies should have at least a basic familiarity with the subject.

But it's not so easy to write something that gets the blood up without sounding like a visit to the gynecologist. Or moving to the other extreme, fill the story with heaving bosoms and flaming loins. The thought of writing that sort of thing makes me want to giggle foolishly.

I prefer romance. It is far more creative and certainly lasts longer. Love and affection with a soupçon of lust, has been the source of more art, music and of course genuine zaniness than I could put into a hundred books.

As far as violence is concerned, I have seen plenty of that, up close and as they say, very personal. Despite the best wishes of the more liberal minded, this is not a utopian planet and doesn't seem likely to become one any time soon.

There are bad people and groups out there folks. We had better get used to the idea. It is sensible to be aware of this fact and be willing to face them with a gun or fist when necessary.

I like writing a story that anyone, regardless of their preferences can read without being offended. I remind myself often that the real business of writing is communication. If you write things that only some people can have you have missed the point.
